Due to the strategic partnering with our affiliated institution, residents in the Sinai general surgery program exceed their operative ACGME requirements with ease.
Because of our extensive network of advanced practice providers, general surgery residents are exposed to substantial operative cases their intern year. They develop confidence in suturing, knot tying and the basics of laparoscopy. This experience is built upon in the second year where they assist on more advanced cases. By their PGY-3 year, they can often perform the majority of straightforward cases without significant assistance.
One of the biggest strengths of the Sinai general surgery residency program is the lack of competition with fellows. During their PGY-4 and 5 years, our residents are the primary surgeons on complex laparoscopic, robotic, vascular and oncology cases. They are often able to act as teaching assistants on acute care surgery cases. Several of our residents have gone into practice as general surgeons straight from residency, a testament to their training and operative comfort levels.
