THE COLLECTION
Holding Space is the guiding principle of the Jachman Family Art Collection at the Mandy & Dennis Weinman Cancer Building. To hold space is to offer presence without judgment, to create room for complexity, and to honor the full range of human experience — especially in moments of vulnerability and transition.
In a healthcare environment, care extends beyond treatment. It lives in the quiet exchanges between people, in gestures of support, and in the physical spaces that surround us. This collection embraces art as part of that care. The selected works explore themes of touch, connection, and place — the textures of human relationships, the grounding force of landscape, and the shared experience of belonging.
Many of the artists represented in the collection are rooted in Baltimore and the surrounding region. Their work reflects resilience, intimacy, migration, memory, and community — reminding us that healing is not only personal, but collective. Through diverse mediums — from painting and textiles to photography and sculpture — the collection invites reflection and emotional pause. The artworks are not intended simply to decorate the walls. They are meant to create an atmosphere — one that acknowledges uncertainty while offering steadiness, one that honors individuality while reinforcing connection.
In this space, art becomes part of the architecture of care. It holds room for grief and hope, for stillness and strength. It holds space for all who enter.
THE MISSION
The mission of the Jachman Family Art Collection is to support healing by creating an environment of care, connection, and belonging through art.
Guided by the theme “Holding Space,” the collection seeks to offer moments of reflection, comfort, and presence within the Mandy & Dennis Weinman Cancer Building. Art has the ability to quiet a room, open a memory, spark hope, or simply provide a welcome distraction. In a healthcare setting, these small but meaningful experiences matter.
The collection brings together artists whose work reflects touch, community, resilience, and place — many with ties to Baltimore and the surrounding region. By centering local voices and diverse perspectives, the collection honors the shared human experiences that connect us.
Above all, this collection exists for the people who move through this building every day — patients, families, caregivers, and staff. Its purpose is not only to beautify the space, but to help create an atmosphere of dignity, warmth, and support.
THE ART COMMITTEE
The Art Committee serves as the guiding body for the Jachman Family Art Collection. Made up of hospital representatives, arts professionals, community members, donors, and patient advocates, the committee works collaboratively to shape and steward the collection.
The committee helps select artworks, review donations and commissions, and ensure that each piece aligns with the collection’s mission of Holding Space: Art of Care, Community, and Belonging. They consider artistic quality, relevance to a healthcare environment, and the ways in which artworks may support healing and reflection.
Beyond selecting works, the committee also helps oversee the long-term care of the collection — including conservation, documentation, insurance, and responsible stewardship. Their role ensures that the collection remains thoughtful, inclusive, and sustainable for years to come.
Above all, the Art Committee works to make sure this collection continues to serve the people who move through the Mandy & Dennis Weinman Cancer Building each day — patients, families, caregivers, and staff.
