Sinai Hospital Marks Completion of Expanded Emergency Department with Hard Hat Salute and Ribbon Cutting

News

What: Sinai Hospital will celebrate the completion of its expanded emergency department (ED) with a ceremonial hard hat salute and ribbon cutting, marking a major milestone in a three-year modernization project. The project more than doubled the department’s footprint, adding larger patient rooms, trauma bays and triage space. It also created a new ambulance intake wing and rapid offloading area, expanded waiting areas, relocated and renovated the radiology suite with additional ultrasound exam room, along with dedicated areas for pediatrics and behavioral health.

The modernized and more spacious ED improves patient flow and expands the Level II Trauma Center. The project increased department capacity by about 30 percent, creating an improved experience for caregivers and patients.

“We are particularly proud that during construction, our emergency department remained fully operational, and our community never experienced an interruption in emergency services,” says Amy Shlossman, president of Sinai Hospital and Grace Medical Center. “Our teams worked tirelessly to ensure our patients received high-quality and compassionate care while nearly every square inch of the department was renovated and expanded. We are so grateful to our teams, partners and community members for their patience and support as we built this state-of-the-art, patient-centered emergency department.”

As the ED teams officially “graduate” from the construction phase, instead of throwing graduation caps, they will wave their ceremonial hard hats as the ribbon is cut to mark completion of the project. Along with hospital leadership, event speakers include the chief of emergency medicine, the hospital’s chief nursing officer and an 11-year-old patient.

The $50 million dollar project was supported by $10 million in state capital funding and $2.5 million of federal funding by Senator Chris Van Hollen and then Senator Ben Cardin, as well as philanthropic support.

Why: The Sinai ED had its last major renovation nearly 30 years ago when the department saw about 55,000 patients a year. In its most recent fiscal year, the team at the Sinai ED treated more than 66,000 patients, including more than 12,000 pediatric patients and more than 20,000 patients arriving by ambulance. Emergency department staff had input into the renovation and worked with EMS (emergency medical services) providers on design for the ambulance offloading area.
