The Daily Record has named Aziza Shad, M.D., the Ellen W. P. Wasserman chair of pediatrics and chief of pediatric hematology oncology at the Herman & Walter Samuelson Children’s Hospital at Sinai, to its 2026 list of Maryland’s Top 100 Women. This marks Dr. Shad’s third time receiving the honor, earning her induction into the Circle of Excellence.

Selected by a panel of business and legal professionals throughout the state, and a representative of The Daily Record, Dr. Shad was recognized for her leadership in pediatric hematology and oncology globally, and her compassionate care for children facing cancer and blood disorders. With more than three decades of experience, she has championed initiatives that enhance the patient experience for children and their families both here in Maryland and around the world.

“I am deeply honored to be recognized among so many remarkable women who are making a difference in their communities,” says Dr. Shad. “Caring for children with cancer is not just about treating the disease, it is about supporting the whole child and their family. This recognition reflects the dedication of our entire team committed to providing compassionate care and improving outcomes for children.”

Among her efforts, Dr. Shad introduced reduced-pain protocols for procedures, such as blood draws and IV placements to help minimize discomfort for young patients. She also set up a comprehensive psychosocial support program that integrates services such as Child Life, art therapy, music therapy and pet therapy, along with wellness programs including yoga, meditation, cooking lessons and support groups. She is now working to replicate this model of psychosocial care for children with cancer in low- and middle-income countries in Africa, particularly in Ethiopia. Through the Aslan Project, in conjunction with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health and Ethiopian colleagues, she has spearheaded the establishment of a pediatric cancer healthcare system for the country.

“Dr. Shad’s commitment to advancing pediatric cancer care and supporting the emotional well-being of patients and families truly exemplifies our mission to improve the health of people in our communities and beyond,” says Amy Shlossman, president of Sinai Hospital of Baltimore and Grace Medical Center and senior vice president at LifeBridge Health. “Her leadership, compassion and dedication have had a profound impact on countless children and families, and we are proud to see her honored with this well-deserved recognition.”
