Sinai Rehabilitation Center - Student Program

Sinai Rehabilitation Center - Student Program

Your fieldwork/affiliation is where you gain the competence and confidence, you’ll need to be a successful entry-level practitioner. As a teaching hospital, we’re committed to preparing tomorrow’s therapists for the growing demands of the field.

Range of Settings and Specialties

Our rehab programs span the complete spectrum of care, including acute, inpatient rehab and outpatient. Students also experience a variety of cases, such as neurological, orthopedic, cardiac and general debility. While students are placed in a specific area for their affiliation, we offer several opportunities to observe other settings.

Mentoring and Supervision

Working one-on-one with your supervisor, you’ll become familiar with diagnoses, evaluation tools and treatment techniques in your setting. As you gain confidence, you’ll gradually take on a caseload to perform evaluations, treatments and discharge recommendations.

Team Approach

At Sinai, we value an interdisciplinary approach to patient care. Our students take part in care meetings and collaborate with doctors, residents, nurses, social workers and other therapists.

Education Opportunities

Sinai is committed to evidence-based medicine, and we offer many opportunities for continuing education. Students are invited to attend in-house lectures, observe surgeries and visit other specialty areas. Learn more about the Sinai student experience for physical, occupational and speech therapy.

At Sinai Rehab center, we treat the full spectrum of patient care. We have student internships in acute-care, inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient, and pediatric departments.

We also offer special experiences for our students to: observe surgery, watch a gait analysis, spend a morning in the NICU, experience aquatic therapy, just to name a few.

Occupational Therapy

Our occupational therapy team welcomes students for Level 1 and Level 2 fieldwork affiliations. Sinai offers a fast-paced environment where you can experience multiple settings and see patients with a range of diagnoses. We work closely with your faculty advisor to meet your university’s specific requirements.

Level 1 Affiliation (30-60 Hours)

For many students, the Level 1 affiliation is their first hands-on experience in a hospital. Our occupational therapists will help you become familiar with the diagnoses, evaluations and treatment techniques in your setting. You’ll observe how the treatment team works together and begin assisting with assessment, treatment and documentation.

Level 2 Affiliation (12 Weeks)

Your Level 2 affiliation is designed to prepare you for life as an entry-level practitioner. Working closely with your supervisor, you’ll perform all aspects of evaluation, treatment, documentation and discharge planning. You will collaborate with the treatment team, report on patient progress and make recommendations about therapy and discharge needs. Students are also asked to prepare a presentation for the department on a timely topic in the field.

Speech Language Pathology

Our Speech-Language Pathology team welcomes students for full-time graduate clinical externships, lasting 12-14 weeks. Sinai offers a fast-paced environment where you can experience multiple settings and gain experience with patients and a range of diagnoses.

We work closely with your externship coordinator to meet your graduate program's specific requirements as well as the requirements of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association.

Second year graduate students are offered an externship at Sinai Rehabilitation Center in the adult inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation departments, as well as acute care. Students will gain experience with assessment, treatment, documentation, discharge planning and interdisciplinary communication and meetings.

Nursing

Our nursing team welcomes students from a number of local and regional nursing programs for clinical rotations as well as senior practicums. Sinai offers a diverse patient population with a range of diagnoses.

We work closely with your faculty advisor to meet your university’s specific requirements. We have clinical rotations available on both the Comprehensive Inpatient Rehabilitation and Neurological Rehab units.
