Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation Therapy for Swallowing

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) can be used in swallowing therapy. An external electrical impulse is a modality combined with traditional swallowing exercises to restore swallowing function and strength.

At Sinai, a speech-language pathologist develops the treatment program and administers the NMES using VitalStim® technology to achieve improvements in swallow function for the patient.

Please contact a speech pathologist if you experience difficulty with swallowing as well as to determine if you are a candidate for this therapy at 410-601-8823.
