Endocrinology Conditions

Below, learn about some of conditions treated by our endocrinology experts.

Adrenal issues

Located above the kidneys, adrenal glands can sometimes have a tumor-like growth called an adenoma. Adenomas vary greatly in function, from being benign to life-threatening to making excess hormones that require medical treatment or surgery. Endocrine experts are best at evaluating these issues.

Calcium problems

Including hypocalcemia (calcium deficiency) and hypercalcemia (an abnormally high level of calcium in the blood).

Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes

Excess facial and body hair in women

Menstrual cycle problems/PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome)

Prolactin issues

A hormone made by the pituitary gland, prolactin regulates breast milk production. If the hormone is high, treatment may be needed to restore fertility in men and women. Careful evaluation can help identify if the source of excess prolactin is from the pituitary or a result of PCOS.

Pituitary issues

Known as the “hormonal master gland,” the pituitary is small but very important. Located at the base of the brain, it regulates hormones for the entire body. If there is a growth inside the gland, it needs to be evaluated by an expert to determine if medical treatment or surgery is needed.

Osteoporosis

A condition in which bones deteriorate or become brittle and fragile due to low bone mass and bone tissue loss.

Thyroid issues

Including thyroid cancer

Parathyroid issues

Four pea-sized glands located in the neck around the thyroid, parathyroid glands often are the cause of too high (and sometimes too low) calcium levels. It is of utmost importance to regulate them for bone, kidney and cardiac health.

Vitamin D deficiency

This is one of the most prevalent vitamin deficiencies in the world, due to lack of adequate sunlight and suboptimal dietary intake. The goal of treatment is to improve bone strength and reduce risk of fractures. Vitamin D supplementation also improves muscle strength and reduces fall risk by 50 percent.
