Prepare for Your Visit to Carroll Hospital

Visitation

The below guidelines will go into effect at Carroll Hospital on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025. In the meantime, if you have questions about the policies or guidelines, please reach out to you or your loved one’s care team directly.

  • Open Visitation: The hospital offers open visitation to patients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, unless otherwise specified in unit-specific guidelines. This policy is effective starting 12/15/25.
  • Designating Support: Patients can designate a Support Person to accompany, visit, and stay in the hospital, and may decline visitors at any time. A Support Person is an individual chosen by the patient to provide emotional support and/or help make decisions.
  • Recommended Limit: Up to two visitors per patient at a time is generally recommended during the day, including the support person, unless otherwise approved.
  • Overnight Stays: One adult visitor (aged 18 or older) who does not require staff assistance for mobility, vision, communication, or personal care may stay with a patient overnight, unless otherwise specified.
  • Children/Minors: Pediatric visitors must be accompanied by a supervising adult and should not be left unattended. The hospitalized patient cannot be the supervising adult.
  • Safety and Conduct:
    • Visitors must comply with infection control policies, including hand hygiene and using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
    • Persons with contagious diseases (like a cold, the flu, or chickenpox) should not visit patients.
    • Contraband, weapons, alcohol, or illegal substances are not allowed on hospital grounds.
    • Visitors behaving disruptively or violating policies may be asked to leave or be banned from hospital grounds (except for emergency care).
    • Smoking is prohibited on hospital property.
    • Only service animals or screened pet therapy animals are allowed.

Unit-Specific Highlights

  • Critical Care Unit (CCU):
    • Visitors may be asked to step out for an hour during shift report (6:30-7:30 AM and PM) to protect patient confidentiality.
    • Children under 12 are limited to 1 hour or less in the room.
  • Behavioral Health Services (Four West):
    • All visitors will be searched for contraband or weapons using metal detectors before entry.
    • No personal items or food/beverages are permitted onto the unit with visitors.
    • Adult & Adolescent Visitation Hours: Monday-Friday: 6–8 pm; Weekends and Holidays: 2–4 pm.
  • Behavioral Health Pod:
    • Visitors will be searched and scanned prior to entry using metal detectors.
    • No children under the age of 18 are permitted to visit adult patients.
  • Family Birthplace:
    • Support persons have open visitation 24 hours a day.
    • Two additional visitors are allowed during labor and delivery.
    • Open visitation after the baby is delivered is permitted at the mother's discretion.
  • Family Birthplace - Special Care Nursery:
    • Only two visitors are permitted at a time.
    • Visitors may only visit if at least one parent is present.

Directions

From BWI

  • From BWI take the Baltimore/Washington Parkway to Baltimore Beltway, Route 695 North toward Towson.
  • From the Baltimore Beltway (695) take the Northwest Expressway, Route 795 to Route 140 to Westminster.
  • Travel Route 140 to Westminster (approximately 20 miles). Turn left onto Center Street (TownMall of Westminster will be on your right, 7-11 and Len Stoler Dealership on your left)
  • Follow Center Street through one stop sign (Willis Street) and two traffic lights (E. Main and E. Green). Hospital will be on your left, approximately 1.1 miles)

From York, PA

  • Take I-83 South approximately 30.9 miles until you come to the Shawan Road West exit (exit number 20B). Merge onto Shawan Road. After approximately 2 miles Shawan Road becomes Tufton Avenue. Stay on Tufton for almost 3.9 miles.
  • Turn right onto Worthington Avenue. After approximately 2.3 miles Worthington Avenue turns into Butler Road. You will stay on Butler Road for 1.7 miles. At this point, make a slight right turn. This will be Maryland-140.
  • Travel Route 140 to Westminster (approximately 20 miles). Turn left onto Center Street (TownMall of Westminster will be on your right, 7-11 and Len Stoler Dealership on your left)
  • Follow Center Street through one stop sign (Willis Street) and two traffic lights (E. Main and E. Green). Hospital will be on your left, approximately 1.1 miles)

From Eldersburg/ Sykesville

  • Start out going North on Freedom Avenue toward Dixon Avenue by turning right. After 0.3 miles, turn right onto Johnsville Road. After 0.3 miles, turn Left onto Liberty Road/MD-26. You will remain on MD-26 for approximately 2.9 miles until you approach the MD-97 ramp.
  • Take the MD-97 ramp. Keep right at the fork in the ramp. Merge onto MD-97. Take MD-97 until it connects with Maryland (route) 140. At this intersection, a shopping plaza with Friendly's and Shoppers will be on your left.
  • Make a left onto Route 140. Follow Route 140 for three traffic lights until it connects with Center Street. You will make a left onto Center Street. (TownMall of Westminster will be on your right, 7-11 and Len Stoler Dealership on your left).
  • Follow Center Street through one stop sign (Willis Street) and two traffic lights (E. Main and E. Green). Hospital will be on your left, approximately 1 1/10 mile).

Parking is complimentary and is located off of the main hospital entrance and in the parking garage. Visitor parking is clearly marked to assist our visitors in finding parking easily.
