At the Herman & Walter Samuelson Breast Care Center at Northwest Hospital, we know early detection saves lives. That belief guides every part of our care, from proactive cancer risk assessments to advanced screening and diagnosis. As an ACR Designated Comprehensive Breast Imaging Center, we’ve been recognized for both the quality of our care and the wide range of services we provide.

Our board-certified, breast fellowship-trained radiologist leads a team that uses advanced tools, including 3D mammography and AI-assisted reads, to deliver personalized care. All of this takes place in a spa-like setting, with thoughtful touches like MammoPad® cushions to make imaging as comfortable as possible.

Services

3D Mammography (Tomosynthesis)

This advanced mammogram takes images from multiple angles to create a 3D view of the breast, improving cancer detection and reducing false positives.

Contrast-Enhanced Mammography (CEM)

CEM combines traditional mammography with contrast dye to better evaluate abnormal results, clarify dense breast tissue, stage known cancers and support patients who can’t undergo MRI.

Breast Ultrasound

A breast ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of breast tissue and is often used as a follow-up to a mammogram, for dense breast tissue or when radiation isn’t recommended.

Breast MRI

A breast MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves to take highly detailed breast images. It’s often recommended for dense breast tissue or high-risk patients.

Stereotactic Breast Biopsy

This minimally invasive procedure uses mammogram guidance to locate and sample a specific area of the breast for testing. It’s often used to check spots seen only on a mammogram, like tiny calcium deposits.

Contrast-Enhanced Stereotactic Breast Biopsy

This minimally invasive procedure combines traditional mammography with contrast dye to locate and sample a specific area of the breast for testing. It may be used when dense breast tissue or unclear images make other tests more difficult to interpret.

Ultrasound Guided Breast Biopsy

This minimally invasive procedure uses ultrasound imaging to locate and sample a specific area of the breast for testing. It’s often used to check lumps or changes found during a mammogram or physical exam.

MRI Guided Breast Biopsy

This minimally invasive procedure uses MRI imaging to locate and sample a specific area of the breast for testing. It’s helpful when a spot can’t be seen with other imaging or for patients at higher risk for breast cancer.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I start getting mammograms?

For women at average risk, annual screening mammograms should begin at age 40.

What is the difference between an annual screening mammogram and a diagnostic mammogram?

Screening mammograms are routine check-ups for people with no symptoms. Diagnostic mammograms are used to evaluate specific breast issues or symptoms.

Do I need an order or referral from my doctor to get a mammogram?

Screening mammograms do not require a doctor's order unless you are younger than 40 years old. All other breast imaging exams, like diagnostic mammograms, contrast-enhanced mammograms, ultrasounds, MRIs and biopsies, do require a doctor’s order.

    Can I get a mammogram if I don't currently have a doctor?

We require patients to be under the care of a physician. If you need help finding one, we can refer you to our GetWell line.

How does breast density affect mammograms?

Dense breast tissue can make it harder to see cancer on a mammogram. You will be informed of your breast density status in your result letter. Depending on your density and personal or family history, other tests like ultrasound, MRI or CEM may be recommended.

Can I get a mammogram if I have breast implants or an implanted device (like a pacemaker)?

Yes, mammograms can safely be done on patients with implants or implanted devices.

    Is a mammogram painful?

Some people may experience discomfort during breast compression, but it's usually brief and manageable.

How do I prepare for a mammogram?

Before your appointment, please remove any deodorant, lotion, or powder from your breast and underarms.

What can I expect when getting my mammogram?

You will be provided with a cloth gown to undress from the waist up. You'll be able to store your belongings in a secure patient locker. Our technologist will confirm your name, date of birth and a few additional details, including your health history and the reason for your visit.

During the actual mammogram, your breast will be gently compressed to get clear images. We use a cushioned surface called the MammoPad® for comfort.

How will I get my results?

You will receive a written summary of your results, and a more detailed report will be sent to your doctor.

What happens if I'm called back after my mammogram?

Getting called back is not uncommon. It means the radiologist wants to take a closer look at a specific area. Most callbacks do not indicate cancer.

Is there support available if I need further testing or a biopsy?

Yes, we have a full staff ready to help you navigate the next steps in your journey, should they be necessary.

What does it mean to be an ACR Breast Imaging Center of Excellence?

The Herman & Walter Samuelson Breast Care Center at Northwest Hospital has earned recognition from the American College of Radiology for meeting the highest standards in image quality, safety and care. This designation shows that we offer a full range of accredited breast imaging services and that our team is specially trained to provide accurate, reliable results.
