National Trauma Awareness Month 2025: Model Safety Every Day: For a Stronger Tomorrow

May is National Trauma Awareness Month (NTAM), a time dedicated to education, prevention and advocacy for those affected by traumatic injuries. This year’s theme, Model Safety Every Day: For A Stronger Tomorrow, emphasizes how everyday choices and actions can protect lives and strengthen communities. In Baltimore, a series of powerful, community-focused events are bringing this mission to life.
Hyperthermia Awareness Event – May 16 at Sinai Hospital
This month, Sinai Hospital’s Division of Trauma will host an event focused on hyperthermia prevention. As warmer weather returns, so does the risk of heat stroke, particularly for young children left in parked vehicles. We’ll demonstrate this risk by documenting temperature changes in one of our own parked cars. Families and caregivers are encouraged to follow along on Instagram, where we’ll share temperature updates, life-saving information, practical tips and prevention resources. Modeling safety starts with awareness, and this event sets the tone for the month.
National Stop the Bleed Day – May 22 at Martin State Airport
On May 22, the community is invited to Martin State Airport for National Stop the Bleed Day. This nationwide campaign teaches participants how to take immediate action in bleeding emergencies. Attendees will learn vital skills such as wound packing, applying pressure and using tourniquets. By learning to respond confidently in crises, you model readiness and resilience—core to this year’s theme.
Bike Helmet Giveaway – June 6 at Foundry Row
Later this summer, Sinai Hospital's Division of Trauma will host a bike helmet giveaway for children and teens at Foundry Row in Owings Mills. The goal is simple: prevent head injuries and promote safe cycling habits. Providing proper safety gear not only protects our youth but also shows them how safety is a shared responsibility modeled by adults and caregivers every day.
Gun Lock Giveaway – Summer 2025 at Mondawmin Mall
Also slated for this summer is a gun lock giveaway at Mondawmin Mall. Firearm safety is critical to reducing preventable injuries, especially in homes with children. This initiative offers free gun locks and safety education to promote secure firearm storage. It’s a reminder that prevention begins at home, and modeling responsible ownership can save lives.
A Community United for Safer Tomorrows
The 2025 NTAM theme is a call to action for all of us. Whether it's learning how to stop life-threatening bleeding, preventing heat stroke or practicing safe cycling and firearm storage, small steps make a big difference. These events empower individuals, strengthen families and build a culture of safety that extends far beyond this month.
Join us this May—and all year long—as we work together to prevent trauma and create a stronger, safer future for everyone.
