More than Medicine: Charlie’s Story
Charlie is a familiar face to many of our pediatric caregivers. At 7 years old, his severe asthma has brought him to the ICU more often than most kids his age. Each time, a broad team comes together to support him. Doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists and Child Life specialists all play a part in helping him feel safe, cared for and able to focus on being a kid.
Before heading home from a recent stay, Charlie wrote his care team a note. He thanked them not only for their medical care but for the small comforts that helped him through it. From chicken nuggets and Legos to visits from the “music lady,” the details mattered. Here’s what he said:
Dear Doctors and Nurses,
Thank you for taking good care of me. You are the best. I love you. I loved your chicken nuggets, Legos and action figures. I am happy to go home but I will miss you all. I also LOVED the music lady she made me happy.
Charlie
Charlie’s note is a reminder that care is shaped by many hands — and many kinds of support. Watch the animated short below to hear his message of thanks.
