A Day in the Life at Center for Hope
Welcome to A Day in the Life at Center for Hope, a blog series highlighting the dedicated professionals who support individuals and families affected by trauma, violence and loss. Center for Hope (CFH) serves as a beacon for those facing difficult times, offering essential advocacy, counseling and resources. In this series, we’ll explore the work and perspectives of those who contribute to CFH’s mission daily.
Today, we meet Manny, our four-legged facility companion. Manny is a black lab who's just as happy showing off his favorite tricks as he is sitting quietly with someone who needs a little comfort. Loyal and intuitive, he has a special way of sensing when someone could use a friend, and he's always ready to lend a paw.
Q1. Hi Manny! Tell us about yourself: Who are you, and what do you do?
A. I am Manny, the facility dog. I will be 10 years old on July 19. My job is to be your companion. I can sit with you during important appointments, hang out with you and do activities. I also like to meet everyone and say "Hi."
Q2. What is your favorite trick to show people?
A. I have A LOT of tricks, but the one kids ask me about the most is, "Give me a paw." I am slow and careful when doing this. This is always a crowd-pleaser!
Q3. What is your favorite part about being a companion?
A. Being a companion is being a loyal friend who is there to help you through tough times. At Center for Hope, I get to meet with lots of different people, have fun and watch the nervousness or any other negative feelings melt away. So, I would have to say that my favorite part is making new friends but also seeing them leave with a new, hopeful disposition.
Q4. How do you know when a person needs your help?
A. It could be body language or attitude. That's why it's important to be present, kind and open. Sometimes, feelings can be too big to put into words or to understand, so being a friendly face and a chill person (or dog) is a great first step.
