International Center for Limb Lengthening

Limb Lengthening Expertise

The International Center for Limb Lengthening (ICLL) is the most experienced center for limb lengthening and deformity correction in North America. Our patients have come from over 60 countries and six continents to receive comprehensive orthopedic treatment by our world-renowned team. Our specialties are:

About the ICLL

Every day, we help children and adults who are struggling with severe and rare orthopedic conditions. People with conditions that other orthopedic surgeons see once in their entire career are seen weekly in our clinics. Orthopedic surgeons from around the world come to learn from our team of expert fellowship-trained surgeons. We are leaders in technologically advanced treatment of upper and lower limb length discrepancies, limb deformities, nonunions, bone and soft tissue defects, bone infections, joint contractures and foot and ankle deformities.

Innovation

The center is internationally recognized for its innovative treatments for Perthes disease, clubfoot, congenital femoral deficiency, fibular hemimelia, bone infection, brachymetatarsia, bunions and deformities associated with achondroplasia. We use cutting-edge technology and the latest proven techniques to treat our patients’ complex orthopedic conditions. As an example, our doctors helped develop the Precice internal limb lengthening nail which has revolutionized limb lengthening.

Patient-Focused Care

The International Center for Limb Lengthening team takes pride in our compassionate patient-focused care. Our doctors spend time with patients and their families to listen to their questions and concerns and clearly explain all their options. Working together, they determine a customized treatment plan to help patients achieve their best possible result.

Strong Patient Support

In addition to our physicians, we have five physician assistants, a child life specialist to support children and their families, and a nurse who specializes in patient education. Some of our doctors offer free online chats so that potential and existing patients and their families can ask questions about their condition. We host a Facebook group for patients and parents of pediatric patients to share ideas and ask questions of other families going through treatment. The Herman and Walter Samuelson Children’s Hospital on Sinai’s campus has pediatric specialists in a variety of disciplines who support our care. For our children who are hospitalized, there are pediatricians on site 24 hours a day, and a pediatric intensive care unit is available if needed.

Specialized Rehabilitation

The Rubin Institute Rehabilitation Department offers advanced physical and occupational therapy on both an inpatient and outpatient basis for adult and pediatric patients at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore.

  • Our on-site physical therapists specialize in difficult to treat orthopedic conditions in children and adults.
  • Our state-of-the-art Wasserman Gait Laboratory conducts biomechanical assessment of patients while they walk so that our doctors and physical therapists can customize treatment.
  • Our anti-gravity ALTER-G treadmill supports weight as a person walks or runs, enabling our patients to exercise sooner, even while still under weight-bearing restrictions, and accelerates the rehabilitation process.

Convenience

Patients receiving treatment and their families are welcome to stay at the affordable Hackerman-Patz House located conveniently right on Sinai Hospital’s campus near the Rubin Institute’s clinic and physical therapy facilities in the Schoeneman Building. The staff at the Hackerman-Patz House is dedicated to creating an atmosphere that is as homelike as possible, and many patient families benefit from meeting other families going through similar surgeries and rehabilitation treatments. Some pediatric patient families also stay at the Ronald McDonald House in downtown Baltimore which offers shuttle transportation to Sinai Hospital.
