Sinai Hospital Breaks Ground on Emergency Department Expansion and Modernization

What:
Sinai Hospital of Baltimore will break ground on an expansion to its emergency department (ED) that will more than double the department's footprint, allowing for larger patient rooms as well as more space for sub-specialties such as pediatrics and behavioral health. The expansion and renovation will improve the experience for patients, visitors and staff members.

The multi-faceted modernization plan will improve patient flow and allow for an estimated 30% increase in the number of patients who can be seen each year, without increasing the number of treatment beds. Sinai's Level II Trauma Center will be enlarged to accommodate the larger number of providers that are needed to care for seriously injured patients.

Sinai ED staff will be on hand to celebrate the groundbreaking for the project that will also expand the waiting areas and create a new ambulance intake wing, with a rapid offloading area for emergency vehicles, allowing crews to return to service more quickly. There will be a new lab and radiology suite.

The new emergency department features 36,600 square feet of new construction (including the addition of a second story for administrative space) combined with 33,500 square feet of total interior renovation, taking the inside spaces down to the ground and rebuilding.

The $50 million dollar project received state funding and, at the federal level, the support of both Sen. Cardin and Sen. Chris Van Hollen, as well as philanthropic support. Projected completion date is December 2024. The emergency department will, of course, remain operational during construction.

When: Wednesday, September 28, 2022 (1 p.m.)

Where: 2401 W. Belvedere Avenue, Baltimore 21215
**Note: groundbreaking will occur on the backside of the hospital.
PARKING FOR MEDIA will be in the Physicians Parking/J Lot on Lanier Avenue "“ gate is diagonally across from Laurel Avenue) "“ see map on page 2

Why: The Sinai ED had its last major renovation more than 25 years ago, when it was projected to serve about 55,000 patients a year. That number steadily increased over the years, reaching a high of more than 82,000 at one point. While ED visits declined during the pandemic, those numbers are again increasing and are projected to be more 62,000 this year. Additionally, advances in technology also require more space for equipment and other services. The ED renovation and expansion will allow Sinai to provide state-of-the-art care in a new and enhanced environment that patients and team members both need and deserve
