Breastfeeding/Lactation

Breastfeeding/Lactation

The BirthPlace at Sinai supports breastfeeding as the best nutrition for all babies. Breastfeeding provides numerous health benefits for mother and baby and promotes bonding.

Some of the benefits of breastfeeding:

  • Breast milk is ideal for infants and is the only nutrition needed for the first four to six months of life
  • Breast milk contains key nutrients in just the right amounts and is easier to digest than any formula
  • Breast milk is always ready at the correct temperature and requires no bottles
  • Breast milk can help fight infection and illness in infants
  • Food allergies are less frequent in infants who are exclusively breastfed
  • Some medical studies associate breastfeeding with reduced risk of certain chronic diseases later in life
  • Benefits for breastfeeding moms include decreased risk of diabetes, osteoporosis, and premenopausal breast and ovarian cancers

Lactation Resource Center

Our Lactation Resource Center offers comprehensive breastfeeding support services prior to the birth of your baby, during your hospital stay and after you've returned home. Our staff members are board-certified lactation consultants and experienced perinatal nurses. We offer a free class as part of our Childbirth Education Series to help you prepare for breastfeeding while you are still pregnant. After mother and baby go home, our support continues through follow-up phone calls and outpatient return visits. A complimentary lactation return visit is offered to all mothers who give birth at Sinai.
