About

Samuel Matz, M.D. is a board-certified and fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and knee and shoulder surgery. Dr. Matz cares for athletes at all levels—ranging from weekend warriors to recreational, high school, collegiate and professional athletes. When patients have a sports-related injury, Dr. Matz’s first line of defense is conservative, non-surgical treatments. He only recommends surgery when it best serves his patients’ condition and goals. He works with every patient to develop a plan to help them get them back to their sport and active lifestyle.

Dr. Matz currently serves as Head Team Physician for McDaniel College’s National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III athletic program. He has over 30 years of experience as a team physician for both McDaniel and for Mount St. Mary’s University’s NCAA Division I athletics teams.

After earning his medical degree and finishing his internship and residency at the University of Maryland, Dr. Matz gained additional specialized fellowship training in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery at the Southern California Center for Sports Medicine. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and he has earned their subspecialty certification in Sports Medicine. This certification is only awarded to surgeons who have demonstrated qualifications in orthopedic sports medicine through additional training, a practice with a high volume of sports medicine cases and significant contributions to the field.
