ORBERA Weight Loss System

ORBERA placedThe Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgery Center is now offering the ORBERA managed weight loss system, a non-surgical system designed to assist adults with a body mass index of 30 to 40, who have unsuccessfully attempted other weight reduction methods, to safely lose weight and maintain that weight loss over time.

The ORBERA is a two-part weight loss system. First, a soft, yet durable balloon is placed in the stomach, helping to fill the stomach and reinforce proper portion control. This procedure is incision-less and non-surgical. The patient is given a mild sedative and the thin, deflated ORBERA balloon is placed in the stomach. It is then filled with saline until it's about the size of a grapefruit. The whole procedure usually takes just 20 to 30 minutes and the patient can generally go home the same day.

Over the course of the next year, the patient receives individually tailored support from a team of experts including a physician, dietitian, psychologist and exercise physiologist. This support network keeps patients motivated, coordinates their program, and helps them work through barriers to meet their long-term weight loss goals.

At the six-month mark of the program, the balloon is removed in the same non-surgical way it was placed: under a mild sedative, the balloon is deflated and removed.

Studies show that the ORBERA system helped the average person, over the course of six months, lose 3.1 times more weight than those who used diet and exercise alone. The procedure is safe and effective, with more than 220,000 placements worldwide.
