Save-A-Limb Scholarship
We would like to congratulate the FIRST ever recipient of the Save-A-Limb Scholarship, Carly Sciandra. Due to Carly's initiative in seeking a scholarship specifically for patients of the Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics (RIAO) who are pursuing a career in health care, the Save-A-Limb Fund has created the Save-A-Limb Scholarship. The scholarship will provide $2,000 towards the cost of college education in a related medical field. To be eligible for the scholarship, a patient must complete a minimum of forty hours volunteering or interning with supervision from a RIAO staff member.
Carly has been a RIAO patient for many years. In 2014, she will become a college student. Her future goals include majoring in biology and then continuing on to medical school. Since she was 13 years old, her dream has been to become a pediatric orthopedic surgeon who specializes in limb lengthening and correcting deformities. Carly has undergone many operations, hospitalizations, and extensive physical therapy as a patient of the RIAO. She feels that "those many surgeries opened up a world of opportunity for me and I wish to give back and help those children who find themselves in similar circumstances".
