Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation

Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) in physical therapy is the use of gentle muscle stimulation by electricity to facilitate a contraction of a muscle. This can help with muscle activation and strengthening to reduce pain and increase function. NMES can be used in conjunction with other modalities, such as blood flow restriction therapy (BFR) and trigger point dry needling. We may recommend the use of NMES at home, especially immediately after total knee replacement and femoral lengthening procedures.
