Northwest Hospital Surgeon Receives International Award for Work with Minimally Invasive Techniques

Peter Geis, M.D., division head of Minimally Invasive Surgery and chair of the Department of Medical Education at Northwest Hospital, was recently recognized with the 2015 Excel Award by the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS)Baltimore, MD – W. Peter Geis, M.D., division head of Minimally Invasive Surgery and chair of the Department of Medical Education at Northwest Hospital, was recently recognized with the 2015 Excel Award by the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS).

Dr. Geis was acknowledged as a pioneer of laparoscopic surgery in the United States and as a leading minimally invasive surgeon at the SLS annual conference in New York during Minimally Invasive Surgery Week (MIS).

He is also well-known as a teaching surgeon and for developing clinical MIS programs at Northwest Hospital and its parent company, LifeBridge Health, both in Maryland.

Dr. Geis’ career spans more than four decades. It began in Illinois where he created the Transplant Program at Loyola Medical Center and VA Hospital. He also performed the first parathyroid transplantation and the first liver transplant in Chicago.

In addition to his extensive research and numerous authored articles, Dr. Geis started educating fellows in 1973 and continues to train the next generation to this day as he directs medical student surgical clerkships at LifeBridge Health.

As the 2015 recipient of the Excel Award, Dr. Geis presented a lecture entitled, “Leadership in Surgery: fortuitous or By Design” at a breakfast during the SLS conference.

The SLS is a non-profit educational organization established to provide an open forum for surgeons and other health professionals interested in minimally invasive surgery and therapy.
