PDF of Schedule (best viewed with Internet Explorer or Firefox)
Chair: John E. Herzenberg, MD
Directors: Shawn C. Standard, MD, Janet D. Conway, MD, and Bradley M. Lamm, DPM
CME Credit Hours: 35.5
CEU Credit Hours (physical therapists): 3.6

This course has been the standard in teaching lower extremity alignment for the past two decades. It is intended for orthopedic surgeons, podiatrists, and allied health professionals who treat long bone deformities. No prior experience is required. Our goals are to introduce basic and advanced concepts in limb alignment, corrective osteotomies, and internal and external fixation for limb reconstruction, including lengthening and realignment. The course includes lectures, deformity planning sessions, hands-on saw bone exercises, and a cadaver lab. Participants will have an opportunity to present adult and pediatric cases to their peers.

Although this is the 20th annual course, we have instituted extensive modifications and updates. More than 60% of the content in the labs is new, and new topics also will be covered in the lectures. Topics to be covered include:

  • Tibial and femoral deformities (uniapical and multiapical)
  • Sagittal and oblique plane deformities
  • Rotational deformities
  • Foot deformities
  • Monolateral/circular external fixation
  • Gait implications for angular and rotational deformities
  • Methods to measure deformity on both plain film and Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS)
  • Surgical techniques for lower extremity osteotomies, soft tissue releases, and flap coverage
  • Navigation for corrective osteotomies
  • Fixator-assisted plating

Opening Reception: A Celebration of SpaceOpening Reception: A Celebration of Space

Post-Course: Pitfalls in Limb Lengthening and Rehabilitation (NEW - Combined)
Tuesday, September 7, 2010
PDF of Schedule (best viewed with Internet Explorer or Firefox)
Chairs: John E. Herzenberg, MD, and Shawn C. Standard, MD
Directors: Anil Bhave, PT, and Janet D. Conway, MD
CME Credit Hours: 7.25
CEU Credit Hours (physical therapists): .75

This course is intended for limb lengthening surgeons, physical and occupational therapists, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, and orthopedic technologists. The goal is for the internationally-renowned faculty to use their vast limb lengthening experience to provide pearls, tips, and tricks for avoiding serious complications and handling difficult outcomes. The course includes lectures and interactive discussions.

Topics to be covered during the first part of this course include:

  • Posttraumatic lengthening
  • Congenital lengthening
  • Intramedullary lengthening devices
  • Pin care problems
  • The unstable hip and knee
  • The stiff knee and ankle
  • Delayed bone healing
  • Infection
  • Foot reconstruction

During the second part of this course, participants will divide into two groups: A Miscellaneous Syndromes Session for physicians and a Rehabilitation Session for allied health professionals. We have designed the rehabilitation track as a breakout session to enable allied health attendees to benefit from both the physician lectures and the rehabilitation lectures.

Miscellaneous Syndromes Breakout Session

This session is intended primarily for physicians. Topics such as Blount disease, Ollier disease, avoiding errors in osteotomies, and avoiding nerve injuries will be covered.

Rehabilitation Breakout Session

Rehabilitation can be problematic for patients undergoing limb lengthening with external or internal fixation. Course participants will be introduced to innovative therapeutic methods that were developed at the Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics to successfully manage and avoid problems that occur during and after limb lengthening. The goal is to review current management standards. Innovative treatment techniques (e.g., splinting, dynamic casting) will be discussed and demonstrated. Topics to be covered include:

  • Rehabilitation considerations for children and adults
  • Techniques for managing stiff joints
  • Splinting strategies
  • Hydrotherapy (pool therapy)
  • Electrical stimulation
