Accreditation Statement:
ABTRFE has granted Sinai Rehabilitation Center & University of Maryland’s Neurologic Physical Therapy Residency program candidacy status.  Candidacy status signifies satisfactory progress toward accreditation. Achieving candidacy status is not an indication that ABPTRFE will grant initial accreditation.  Participants who graduate from a program in candidacy status are not deemed to have completed an accredited program.

The Sinai Rehabilitation Center and University of Maryland Neurological Physical Therapy Residency program is pending ABTRFE accreditation in May 2024. Enrollment of the initial resident began in July 2023.

Residency Mission Statement

The mission of the Sinai Rehabilitation Center and University of Maryland Physical Therapy Residency Program is to provide comprehensive, post-professional education and mentorship in neurologic physical therapy throughout the continuum of care that will offer the opportunity to advance clinical knowledge and skills. The partnership of the clinical and academic institutions integration will bring together strengths to provide robust educational experiences. The program will graduate physical therapists who are influential contributors in healthcare empowering and improving the quality of life of our patients, family members and the communities we serve.

Our robust curriculum will incorporate all aspects of the Neurologic Description of Residency Practice (DRP), leveraging MedBridge online education modules (NCS Prep Program) coupled with individualized face-to-face instruction with expert mentors across a range of specialty areas.

Patient Care Settings

Our program is designed to offer you extensive learning opportunities throughout the full continuum of care.  As Maryland’s largest community teaching hospital, Sinai gives you unparalleled diversity in urban, suburban and rural patient demographics.

Acute and Critical Care Rotation
20 Weeks

Develop foundational knowledge to provide individualized evidence-based care to acute medical patients with neurologic diagnoses. Collaborate with interdisciplinary team to create comprehensive plan of care and to determine discharge recommendations. Includes continuum of neuro focused care from emergency care to acute and critical care areas of the main hospital. Provide comprehensive, compassionate care to patients with complex medical issues resulting from a stroke, spinal cord injury, trauma, surgery or other complicated conditions with a multidisciplinary team

Inpatient Rehabilitation
16 Weeks

Expand your knowledge and advance your skills in The Louis and Phyllis Friedman Neurological Inpatient Rehabilitation Center which is a 20-bed unit serving patients with diagnoses including brain injury, CVA, and multiple sclerosis. The stroke and brain injury programs are CARF accredited.

Outpatient Rehabilitation
20 Weeks

Enhance your clinical decision making skills working with multidisciplinary team of experts to assist patients to return to their highest level of function. Experience patient-focused specialized Day program.

  • Involvement with clinical research staff on the Sinai Hospital campus

  • Work with a multidisciplinary team, including collaboration with physicians, nurses, psychiatrists, physician assistants, social workers, speech therapists, neuropsychologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists and psychologists

How to Apply

We begin accepting applications on October 1, 2023, and our application deadline is April 15, 2024. Our faculty will review completed applications in RF-PTCAS and interview candidates on a rolling basis starting in March 2024. Please apply early, as a candidate with an exceptional completed application may be interviewed and selected prior to the application deadline.

Candidates for the Sinai Rehabilitation Center and University of Maryland Neurologic Physical Therapy Residency program must meet the following criteria:

  • Applicant must be a graduate of an accredited physical therapy program prior to start of residency

  • If applicant is a new graduate, NBPTE exam must be taken on or before the April test date

  • Applicant must have a valid Maryland physical therapy license prior to start of residency program

  • Applicant must have an American Heart Association CPR Certification

Residency Program Outcomes

Outcome data to be posted upon completion of 2023-2024 resident to include completion rate, percent of graduates obtaining employment in the field of neurological physical therapy, graduates' direct quotes, and graduates sat for ABPTS board certification exam in neurology.
