Hospital of Baltimore recently signed the Healthy Food in Health Care
Pledge, becoming the first hospital in Maryland to commit to serving healthy
food that is produced locally.
“We see the pledge as an important framework for
increasing the hospital’s efforts to provide healthy and locally grown food,”
said Laure Sullivan, director of Food and Nutrition Services at Sinai
Hospital.
The Healthy Food in Health Care Pledge, a program of
Health Care Without Harm, outlines steps hospitals can take to support healthy
food. Health Care Without Harm is an international coalition, working to
transform the health care industry worldwide, without compromising patient
safety or care, so that the food is ecologically sustainable and no longer a
source of harm to public health and the environment.
“Sinai is showing leadership for our state, and for the
country,” said Louise Mitchell, sustainable food coordinator for Maryland
Hospitals for a Healthy Environment. “There is a growing recognition across the
country that local, sustainable food is a wise investment in prevention. We are
fortunate to have a facility like Sinai in our community, and we hope more
hospitals across our region will follow their lead.”
Sinai Hospital joins 49 health care facilities around the
country that are protecting health by sourcing nutritious, local and sustainable
food.
