Sinai Division of Orthopedic Oncology

Sinai Division of Orthopedic Oncology The Division of Orthopedic Oncology at LifeBridge Health has special expertise in providing evaluation and treatment for all types of tumors affecting bones and soft tissues in children and adults.

Although the majority of tumors and growths in children--such as bone cysts--are benign, we are the only community-based hospital in Maryland with an interdisciplinary team composed of an orthopedic oncologist, pediatric oncologist, pediatric surgeon and radiation oncologist supported by pediatric ICU to deal with malignant tumors in children.

The interdisciplinary approach at The Division of Orthopedic Oncology is used in the care of adult benign and soft tissue tumors with a team composed of an orthopedic oncologist, musculoskeletal radiologist,  musculoskeletal pathologist, medical oncologist and radiation therapist.

The Division of Orthopedic Oncology provides the latest advances in both the medical and surgical treatments for patients with bone and soft tissue tumors. These include minimally invasive diagnostic biopsies and the revolutionary CyberKnife®, which uses cruise missile technology to noninvasively target tumors that were previously inoperable.

The majority of patients treated do not require an open surgical biopsy in the operating room, but can undergo biopsy either at the time of initial evaluation in the physician's office or through CAT scan guidance in the Department of Radiology. Limb Sparing surgery is utilized for bone and soft tissue cancers, and these advanced techniques avoid amputations in many patients.

The physicians at The Division of Orthopedic Oncology have special training and expertise in benign and malignant tumors affecting the spine and have pioneered techniques to control and even cure these tumors.

Many cancers that begin in organs such as breastprostatelung and kidney spread to areas of bone (metastasize), causing patients pain and even fractures. Our research and experience provide patients with treatments that can reduce pain and return individuals to optimal function.
