Antepartum Physical Therapy – PT for the expectant mother on bedrest

Complication in pregnancy such as placenta previa or premature rupture of membranes, can sometimes lead to varying levels of bedrest orders. Physical therapy is often consulted for these patients to provide education and a carefully designed home exercise program.

These interventions help minimize muscle atrophy and the risk of other potential complication of prolonged bedrest, such as blood clots. The physical therapist will also educate the patient regarding positioning in bed, breathing and pelvic floor exercises as appropriate.
