The Divisions of Soft Tissue Surgery and Hyperbaric Medicine at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center (STC) treat a large number of patients with complex soft tissue infections and chronic non-healing wounds.. During their 3rd clinical year, the Sinai resident will spend four weeks on that service. This rotation is designed to expose the resident to the management of extensive (necrotizing) soft tissue infections in complex, multi-morbid and morbidly obese patients, including operative debridement, reconstruction, ICU management, hyperbaric oxygen therapy and outpatient wound clinic. The rotation follows, in a natural progression, the Trauma rotation at the STC, so that the resident does not have to relearn the infrastructure of the institution and, therefore, competency-based learning is maximized.
During the rotation, the resident will participate in the following educational activities:
- Resident core curriculum in Trauma and Critical Care: daily, one hour
- Morbidity and mortality conference in Trauma: weekly, one hour
- Trauma/Critical Care Grand Rounds: weekly, one hour (combined with General Surgery Grand Rounds)
