What is the SmartPill?

The SmartPill is a single-use, ingestible capsule that allows your physician to monitor pressure, pH and temperature through your entire GI tract. It provides gastric emptying time, small bowel transit time, colonic transit time, combined small and large bowel transit time and whole gut transit time.
The SmartPill capsule measures 26 mm x 13 mm and is slightly larger than a multi-vitamin.
What components make up the SmartPill GI Monitoring System?
The system is comprised of 10 SmartPill capsules, a SmartPill data receiver, a SmartPill activation fixture, a SmartPill docking station and a system computer loaded with MotiliGI™ software.
The battery life of the SmartPill capsule and data receiver is 5+ days of life.
How does the SmartPill work?
First, the patient ingests a small meal prior to swallowing the SmartPill. The patient can then leave the physician’s office and return to his or her normal routine. However, the patient must wear a data receiver on a belt clip or around the neck for several days.
As the capsule travels through the GI tract it will collect pressure, pH and temperature data. The patient will return to the physician, who will then download the collected information onto a system computer. It takes about 10 minutes to download the data from the receiver.
The physician will then review the test results with the patient.
How long does it take to pass the capsule?
The single-use capsule normally passes painlessly and naturally within 24-48 hours.
