Intraocular Infections

Perhaps one of the most serious eye emergencies is infection within the eye cavity. This can occur after penetrating trauma, after eye surgery or from infections from the blood stream. Treatment involves the prompt injection of antibiotics into the eye. In extreme cases, surgery must be performed to remove infectious material and inflammation from the eye. If not treated immediately, eye infections result in permanent blindness. Even when treated immediately, the prognosis for useful vision is very guarded.
