General Surgery - Residency Program

General Surgery

Image of a man in scrubs There are two surgical services at Sinai Hospital. The Red Surgery service is focused around trauma surgery, emergency general surgery, pediatric surgery, vascular surgery and surgical oncology; the Blue Surgery service is centered on elective general surgery, thoracic surgery, minimally invasive surgery and bariatric surgery. All residents will rotate an equal amount of time on each service throughout each year of training.

On each service, the resident will work with and be supported by a complement of experienced mid-level providers (nurse practitioners and physician assistants). Medical and students of allied health professions rotate on the surgical services throughout the year. The resident will assume a partnership as well as a teaching and supervisory role to these various providers, in accordance to his or her level of training.

The goal of the general surgery rotations is to give the resident a broad and well-rounded experience in the principal surgical specialties required by the ACGME and ABS. The operative volume with over 4,000 cases per year in the department is such that each resident will finish his or her training well above the level required for board certification.

Patient care in and out of the operating room is complemented by a comprehensive schedule of outpatient and educational activities (see Education), as well as an array of specific courses and certifications that will complete the well-rounded training experience in general surgery at Sinai Hospital.
