The Diabetes in Pregnancy Education and Management Program was started in August 2001 by the Institute of Maternal-Fetal Medicine in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology. It is an officially recognized program by the American Diabetes Association. The goal of the program is to provide early intervention and follow-up of pregnant women with pre-gestational and gestational diabetes.
The multidisciplinary team consists of maternal fetal medicine specialists, a nurse practitioner/diabetes educator, a dietitian and a social worker. The multidisciplinary team approach allows patients to receive diabetes education immediately following diagnosis and ongoing, intensive monitoring of blood glucose and maternal-fetal well-being.
The program creates an ongoing dialogue between the patient, the diabetes specialists and the primary care provider regarding blood glucose control, fetal growth and maternal-fetal well-being.
