Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dentistry

The Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) and Dentistry plays an integral role in health care delivery at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. The Division provides comprehensive inpatient consultative and oral health care services.

Our OMS surgeons treat traumatized patients in the Emergency Department for dental, oral, jaw, soft tissue, and facial skeletal injuries. The Division is affiliated with the oral and maxillofacial (OMS) residency training program at the University of Maryland. It is the primary service for all facial injuries at Sinai’s Trauma Center. There is an active comprehensive inpaitent consultative service covering a wide variety of oral and facial concerns. Our oral and maxillofacial surgeons are the experts in performing procedures to correct skeletal jaw deformities, treating facial odontogenic infections, removing head and neck cysts and tumors, reconstructing oral and jaw defects, dental implant surgery, and performing temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgery and management.

Our hospital trained general dentists and pediatric dental specialists often treat patients in an ambulatory surgical setting, providing comprehensive dental care that includes prophylaxis (cleaning), fillings, crowns, and root canals for patients who otherwise cannot be treated in an office setting. Most of the children’s comprehensive care is completed in Sinai’s state of the art family-friendly Children’s Diagnostic Center of Sinai’s Herman and Walter Samuelson Children’s Hospital.

The academic program is open to our attending staff, local dentists and dental specialty residents. OMS Residents from the University of Maryland, the Baltimore Veteran’s Administration Medical Center, and the Johns Hopkins Hospital, all participate in our Grand Rounds and Annual Symposium.

Grand Rounds are held during the academic year, as announced, on the last Monday of the Month at 6PM in the Board Room on the first floor of Sinai. The Alan S. Exler. D.D.S. Annual Dental Symposium, established in 2002, is a yearly full day academic program held in the Spring in Zamoiski Auditorium at Sinai.
