Ambulatory Medicine Elective

Description and Goals of Course: Students are given opportunities to evaluate and treat patients in an office setting designed as a model HMO practice.  Students are supervised by full-time faculty clinicians, and treat common ambulatory adult diseases while gaining an appreciation for the process and nuances of the office visit.  The educational approach is patient-centered, with students discussing each patient with faculty preceptors after the initial student evaluation.  Students are encouraged to follow a patient longitudinally over the course of the month.

Students should attend all Department of Medicine conferences, and have the option of preparing a lecture on a topic of interest in ambulatory medicine for presentation to the faculty at the end of the rotation.

Additional Comments: The minimum requirements for acceptance by a department are a medical school cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) and a USMLE Step 1 score of 85/205 or a COMLEX score of 80. In addition, for this elective the completion of the Basic Medicine Clerkship is required.
