A 12-bed inpatient unit and a partial hospitalization/intensive outpatient program (PHP/IOP), complemented by psychiatric consultation services, provide comprehensive inpatient, ambulatory and emergency psychiatric care in a comfortable and attractive setting.

Inpatient Unit

The inpatient unit is designed to treat adults over the age of 18 who, because of emotional and behavioral difficulties, can no longer live or function safely in their usual daily environment and routine.

The inpatient unit provides 24-hour skilled psychiatric nursing care and interventions, daily assessment and treatment oversight by a psychiatrist, and a coordinated, goal-driven plan of care delivered by a multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals.  The focus is on rapid stabilization of acute psychiatric symptoms.  This is accomplished during an average length of stay of 5-6 days, in preparation for moving the patient to the next phase of treatment in a less restrictive setting.

Patients at Northwest Hospital each have a private room with its own bath and shower.  Kosher meals are available upon request.

Partial Hospitalization/Intensive Outpatient Programs

The Partial Hospitalization and Intensive Outpatient Programs (PHP/IOP) are designed as an alternative to hospitalization and offer the intensity of acute inpatient care without an overnight stay in the hospital.  Patients may be enrolled directly into either of these programs, or may be "stepped down" from an inpatient setting.  Treatment is group-based, and focuses on helping each patient work toward his or her specific goals, with an emphasis on developing techniques to enhance coping skills, stress management and problem-solving abilities.

The advantages of the PHP and IOP include:

  • Patients can continue to live in their home settings and receive outpatient care at the hospital up to five days per week, four hours per day
  • Psychiatric assessment and treatment oversight are provided by the psychiatrist at least weekly
  • Patients receive the benefits of care from a integrated multidisciplinary treatment team
  • Conditions that would otherwise result in inpatient hospitalization can be stabilized in an ambulatory setting
  • Hospital stays may be shortened by the ability to "step down" to a PHP or IOP level of care.

Components of Care

Both programs offer an integrated plan of care based on initial and ongoing assessment by the treatment team, which includes psychiatrists, nurses, social workers and occupational or expressive therapists.  Additional consultations from specialists such as dieticians are available as needed.  The multidisciplinary treatment team combines various fields of expertise to provide the most positive therapeutic experience possible for each patient.

Multiple treatment plans are used, including individual therapy, group therapy, education groups, family therapy and physician oversight.

Psychiatric Consultation Services

Psychiatric consultation, including treatment recommendations, is available both to patients who are admitted through Northwest Hospital Center's Emergency Room and to patients who are hospitalized on medical/surgical units.  Consultations are provided by master's level psychiatric nurse and social work clinicians with psychiatrist back up.

At Northwest Hospital Center, patients are treated with dignity, understanding and respect.  Ample free parking is conveniently located directly across from the Hospital on Carlson Lane.  For more information about Psychiatric Services at Northwest Hospital Center, call (410) 601-5461.
