Freedom to Screen Program

Attention: We are currently not accepting new patients at this time. Thank you for your understanding.

The Freedom to Screen Program (F2S) at the Breast Care Center at Northwest Hospital provides free annual screening mammograms for women who are uninsured or whose health insurance does not cover the cost of an annual breast cancer screening.

The National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommends that women age 40 and older get a screening mammogram every year to help detect breast cancer at its earliest, most treatable stage. Our Breast Care Center patients no longer need to obtain a physician order for an annual screening mammogram.

Diagnostic mammograms and ultrasounds are also covered through the Freedom to Screen Program for women with abnormal screening results as well as uninsured women under the age of 40 who may have symptoms of breast cancer.

Symptoms of breast cancer include:
  • Breast pain (non-menstrual related)
  • Breast lump
  • Nipple discharge
  • Abnormal redness
  • Inflammation or swelling
  • Skin dimpling
  • Inverted nipple

All patients of the Breast Care Center at Northwest Hospital must obtain a physician order for diagnostic imaging. Uninsured women with an order from their healthcare provider can be scheduled for imaging services at a time that is convenient for them, and the Freedom to Screen Program will cover those services for patients who are eligible for the program.

Women who may need additional services such as a breast biopsy or breast cancer treatment care are provided assistance with applying for coverage through Maryland state and local health department breast cancer diagnostic and treatment programs or through the Northwest Hospital Patient Financial Assistance Program.

You are eligible for the Freedom to Screen Program if you:
  • Do not have health insurance to cover the cost of your imaging (uninsured or underinsured)
  • Have a household income at or below 300 percent FPL
  • Are 40 years of age or older for a screening mammogram (or younger if symptomatic)
  • Are a Maryland resident
The Freedom to Screen Program provides the following services to uninsured women who are residents of Maryland:
