Day of Dance: For Your Health

A Special Note to Day of Dance 2013 Attendees: Thank you all for making Day of Dance such a terrific event! We hope that you had a ball while dancing, eating healthy food and learning more about heart health.

Day of Dance is an annual event hosted by hospitals part of the national Spirit of Women network. In 2013, Northwest Hospital's Day of Dance was actually an energetic evening with various dance demonstrations, performances and entertainment! As the ladies explored our many offerings, they learned simple ways to stay healthy. They participated in health screenings and enjoyed light, heart-healthy food and refreshments. Best of all, they had a chance to tear up the dance floor!

Ubaka Hill

Dance and Musical Entertainment

Ubaka Hill – featured artist
Ubaka Hill is an authentically original, energetic performer, composer, songwriter, recording artist, motivational speaker, conference weaver, teacher and facilitator of hand drumming workshops for more than 25 years throughout the United States. Her soul-vision and intention is to facilitate and inspire personal transformation, empowerment, healing and joy with music that moves you.

Ubaka plays her signature “Ube” drum, djembe drum and various other percussion instruments of different cultures including gongs, hand drums, rattles, didgeridoo and singing bowls. Her music is intentional and indefinable, inspired by her appreciation of Celtic, jazz, Latin, African, shamanic, folkloric, Aboriginal and contemporary music, including the art of creative improvisation. In her solo performances, she creatively weaves percussion, poetry and song to inspire a positive, energetic atmosphere for her diverse audiences to sing and dance with her.

Jazzercise

Today’s jazzercise combines hip-hop, jazz dance, yoga, Pilates, kickboxing and resistance training for a fun, strenuous workout that burns 10 calories per minute! Rene Loeb, owner of Jazzercise Columbia Fitness Center, says, “We’ve got both college kids and women in their 60s who come in and absolutely love this workout. Believe me, it’s high-intensity. You will sweat and you will be tired. But you’ll also feel invigorated and lighter. And I promise you will have a ball!”

GeorgiaBoyDance

This dance company, based in Pikesville, will be doing demonstrations of modern baloque, hip hop, rueda (a form of salsa), jazz and swing dancing.

Zumba
with Maisha McCoy
Maisha is a pharmacist who combines her profession as a health professional with her passion for fitness. Since 1996, she has taught group fitness classes at various athletic clubs, and she teaches Zumba at local churches. Her mission is to use her health and fitness experience to provide a wealth of information to the community.

Zumba is a fun and energetic workout that combines dance moves from a variety of cultures. Come find out from Maisha why Zumba is so wildly popular!
