Women's Wellness Center Opens at Northwest Hospital
|
|
Northwest Hospital has recently opened a Women's Wellness Center for the busy woman who may have lacked the time to take care of herself until now. The center offers a holistic approach for not only a woman's gynecologic care but also her other health needs. In addition to being a medical hub, the center offers a la carte services such as nutritional counseling, acupuncture, massage, exercise classes and free community events such as lectures on topics such as menopause management. The center is led by Dee-Dee Shiller, D.O., a board-certified gynecologist, and employs a health coach, a registered nurse who works with patients to remind them of their upcoming tests, schedule their specialist appointments and encourage them in meeting their health goals.
"The Women's Wellness Center, along with our Herman & Walter Samuelson Breast Care Center, really makes Northwest Hospital a nucleus for women's health care,” says Erik Wexler, the hospital's president and COO. "We now have a critical mass of women's servicesunder one roof, from digital mammography and breast cancer treatment to cervical cancer screening and minimally invasive hysterectomy to health coaching and healthy lifestyle classes.”
Dr. Shiller was previously the chief of gynecology at Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore and received her medical degree from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Shiller is not new to LifeBridge Health, having completed her OB/GYN residency at Sinai Hospital where she was recognized as the Best Minimally Invasive Surgical Resident in 2005. Her focus is gynecology and she sees patients of all ages, though she does not deliver babies. For those who are candidates for it, she can perform laparoscopic hysterectomy, which results in less pain and scarring and shorter recovery times. Her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree also enables her to practice osteopathic manipulation – hands-on care for muscle and bone pain.
Dr. Shiller's approach to care is holistic, as she believes that stress and obesity are responsible for a large number of the health problems women face. Therefore, the center focuses on equipping women to better manage their lifestyles, whether that is by learning how to reduce stress through meditation, meeting with a dietitian or taking a Pilates class. Dr. Shiller is dedicated to patient teaching, and she enjoys talking frankly to groups of women about topics such as birth control, chronic pain and how to have a better sex life after menopause.
The Women's Wellness Center is currently accepting new patients. Those who would like an appointment at the center may call 410-601-WELL (9355).
Northwest Hospital is a part of LifeBridge Health, one of Baltimore's largest health organizations that also includes Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital, and Courtland Gardens Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
