LifeBridge Health Goes Wireless

These days everything seems wireless – airports, hotels, coffeehouses and now hospitals. LifeBridge Health, a Maryland health care organization, recently launched a wireless network allowing guests at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore and Northwest Hospital Center to log-on to the Internet, free of charge, while visiting family and friends.

"LifeBridge Health operates three wireless networks, which host a variety of new communication and patient care technologies,” said Karen Barker, chief information officer at LifeBridge Health.  "One of our networks is dedicated for guest users, providing a convenience for our visitors and at the same time ensures that no patient or confidential information is compromised.”

LifeBridge Health began the process to make the system wireless nearly two years ago with a lengthy site survey of Sinai Hospital and Northwest Hospital Center. Afterward, more than 200 access points were installed throughout Sinai and 120 points at Northwest Hospital.

With the recent introduction of wireless access, guests at Sinai Hospital are now able to bring laptops to the hospital and conveniently access CarePages, a free Internet service that enables patients, families and friends to create their own secure Web page, to post patient updates and messages of support.

"CarePages allows patients to connect with family and friends, particularly ones in distant locations,” said Lara Klick, director of Guest Relations and Volunteer Services. "Now with wireless service in the hospital, patients can receive words of comfort and support via email right at the bedside.”

Sinai Hospital and Northwest Hospital Center are the only facilities in LifeBridge Health presently operating wireless networks. Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital hopes to be online by the beginning of 2007 and will begin offering CarePages for residents and patients by the end of the year.
