Baltimore, MD – Michael A. Williams, M.D., medical director of The Sandra and Malcolm Berman Brain & Spine Institute (BSI) at LifeBridge Health, is the editor of a new case-based medical textbook titled “Practical Ethics in Clinical Neurology,” published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW), part of Wolters Kluwer Health. This publication is a groundbreaking textbook that offers useful guidance to practicing neurologists, medical students, residents, fellows and other medical professionals to assess and resolve ethical challenges that are routinely encountered in the care of patients with neurologic disorders.
“The goal of the book is to provide neurologists with the practical knowledge, skills and confidence to recognize, evaluate and take action to resolve ethical challenges,” said Williams. “No other book in the field has used a case-based learning approach, which makes this book one that will be kept handy on the desk rather than gathering dust on a bookshelf.”
With 28 contributing authors, “Practical Ethics in Clinical Neurology” features 29 chapters and 67 real-life cases that reflect the broad scope of ethical issues seen in adult and pediatric neurology. In addition to editing the text, Williams wrote several chapters for the book.
Williams is considered one of the country’s leading experts on ethics in neurology and is a sought-after speaker. He served as chair of the Ethics, Law and Humanities Committee of the American Academy of Neurology from 2003 to 2009 and is currently a member of the Sinai Hospital Ethics Committee.
The BSI is one of the only integrated inpatient and outpatient programs in Maryland dedicated to improving outcomes in patients with diseases of the nervous system and spine.
