Northwest Hospital’s Samuelson Breast Care Center Receives National Accreditation

The Herman & Walter Samuelson Breast Care Center at Northwest Hospital has been granted a three-year accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. A breast center that achieves NAPBC accreditation has demonstrated a firm commitment to offer its patients every significant advantage in their battle against breast disease.

“This accreditation ensures that we follow the highest standards of comprehensive care and treatment for patients with diseases of the breast,” says Dawn Leonard, M.D., breast surgeon and medical director of the Samuelson Breast Care Center. “The accreditation also recognizes our efforts in offering the latest clinical trials for eligible patients and our enduring commitment to raising breast cancer awareness and improving health in our community through screening, outreach and education.”

Accreditation by the NAPBC is only given to those centers that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. During the survey process, the center must demonstrate compliance with standards established by the NAPBC for treating women who are diagnosed with the full spectrum of breast disease. The standards include proficiency in the areas of center leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education and quality improvement.

Breast cancer is not just one but several breast diseases; and if current trends continue, about one of every eight women will be diagnosed with a cancer of the breast at some point in her life. Even more women experience benign breast conditions that require medical evaluation and treatment.

Choosing care at a NAPBC-accredited center ensures that patients have access to:

·    Comprehensive care, including a full range of state-of-the-art services
·    A multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best treatment options
·    Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options

The Herman & Walter Samuelson Breast Care Center is part of LifeBridge Health’s Alvin & Lois Lapidus Cancer Institute.
