Sinai Hospital’s ER-7 Honored with a Lantern Award Recognizing Safe Practice, Safe Care

Sinai Hospital’s tradition of state-of-the-art service and exemplary care has been acknowledged by the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA), which bestowed a prestigious Lantern Award to the Emergency department. The ER-7 at Sinai Hospital was among the 20 winners out a pool of 51 applicants, distinguishing itself in the areas of leadership, practice, education, advocacy and research.

This award honors emergency departments whose commitments to healthy work environments have increased the overall quality of the treatment they provide; accomplishments in integrating evidence-based practice and innovation into emergency care also factored into the judging process.

“I am very proud of our ER-7 team, which continues to deliver quality and compassionate care to our patients every day,” said Diane Bongiovanni, R.N., director of Patient Care Services at Sinai Hospital.

The application process for the Lantern Award is similar to the application process for Magnet recognition status, which is another pivotal designation that Sinai Hospital won. In 2008, Sinai Hospital was the first community/teaching hospital to receive this elite status from the Magnet Recognition Program, which was created by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The criteria for earning Magnet recognition is similar to the attributes singled out for the Lantern Award, proving that Sinai Hospital and the ER-7’s dedicated staff continue to strive for excellence in patient care and safety.

The image of Florence Nightingale’s lantern, which cast its light over the sick and wounded, has become an indelible symbol of nursing. Sinai Hospital’s ER-7, through its rich tradition of innovation and compassion, is continuing to let that light shine.
A reception for award recipients will be held at the ENA Annual Conference in Tampa, Florida, on September 21.
