Mark Katlic, M.D., Joins Sinai Hospital as New Chief of Surgery

Mark Katlic, M.D., has been named chief of Surgery at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. A nationally recognized expert in geriatric surgery, Katlic most recently served as director of Thoracic Surgery at Geisinger Health System, Northeast, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.

“Sinai’s Department of Surgery, already excellent, is poised to become one of the best in the nation,” said Katlic. “My family and I are thrilled to be part of the Sinai community.”

Katlic has extensive surgical experience. His pioneering work in video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) under local anesthesia and sedation resulted in nearly 400 published cases in The Annals of Thoracic Surgery in 2010. He also performs the full range of “open” thoracic surgery, including complex lung, esophageal and tracheobronchial procedures.

“Dr. Katlic is an important new addition to our leadership team at Sinai Hospital,” said Neil Meltzer, president and COO of Sinai Hospital and senior vice president of LifeBridge Health.  “He possesses a well-deserved reputation for his significant contributions to the field of thoracic surgery. Through Dr. Katlic’s leadership, we will continue to build upon our hospital’s rich heritage of providing comprehensive, advanced and compassionate surgical care to our patients.”

Katlic has just published a new book, “Cardiothoracic Surgery in the Elderly.” A second edition of his previous book, “Principles and Practice of Geriatric Surgery,” has also just been released. He earned his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore and completed residencies in surgery and cardiothoracic surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Sinai Hospital is part of LifeBridge Health, one of the largest, most comprehensive providers of health services in northwest Baltimore.
