Sinai Hospital's Stroke Center Designated a Primary Stroke Center
The Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services
(MIEMSS) has awarded the Stroke Center at Sinai Hospital with a Primary Stroke
Center Certification, recognizing the center for its exceptional efforts to
foster better outcomes in stroke care.
"Earning certification by MIEMSS is an assurance to our
patients that Sinai is using the latest, and best therapies and treatments to
ensure the best possible outcomes for patients,” said Adrian Goldszmidt, M.D.,
chief of the Department of Neurology and head of the Stroke Center at
Sinai. Goldszmidt also serves as director of the Headache Program in the
LifeBridge Health Brain & Spine Institute.
This designation follows the Stroke Center certification
in February 2006 by The Joint Commission. Together, these certifications
recognize that successful treatment of stroke patients is time-critical, and
that Sinai Hospital follows national standards to provide the best and quickest
available treatment for stroke patients. In addition, the designation permits
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel to transport apparent stroke patients
to Sinai over a non-designated center.
The services provided at the Stroke Center at Sinai
Hospital help decrease complications from the disease while increasing the
efficiency of necessary care. The Stroke Center's streamlined system allows
patients to receive proper and prompt treatment that includes a
multidisciplinary approach from emergency medicine, neurology, neurosurgery,
interventional radiology, rehabilitation services, pharmacy and social work.
In addition, the Stroke Center works hand-in-hand with
the hospital's Rehabilitation Center, which has developed and implemented a
Stroke and Neurology Support Group that provides comprehensive rehabilitation to
patients and support for their families.
"The dedicated staff at the Stroke Center follows
patients throughout their entire stay, from admission and treatment to discharge
and rehabilitation,” said Goldszmidt. "The Stroke Center is able to utilize all
of the resources offered at Sinai and deliver comprehensive care to patients and
their families on one campus.”
