Northwest Hospital in Randallstown has launched a program to benefit critically ill medical and surgical patients being treated in the hospital's new state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The Intensivist Program is staffed by physicians who are board certified in critical care medicine. These specialists -referred to as intensivists-coordinate a critically ill patient's overall care while they are being treated in the ICU. They work closely with a dedicated multidisciplinary team of nurses, respiratory therapists and other specialists, to address subtle changes in a patient's condition early and proactively, ensuring the highest level of quality care.
"This is an important service we are offering to our patients," said Michael Lansing, M.D, head of Northwest Hospital's Intensivist program. "National statistics show that patients in hospitals with an intensivist program have improved outcomes and shorter hospital stays."
Lansing is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease and critical care medicine. He also serves as the director of Pulmonary Rehabilitation at Northwest Hospital, a position he has held since 1994. Other intensivists include Abdallah I. Kafrouni, M.D., a fellowship-trained intensivist who is board certified in sleep medicine and has a special interest in sleep diseases including sleep apnea, narcolepsy and insomnia, and Steven D. Fuller, Ph.D., D.O., who is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and critical care medicine.
"Intensivists are an added resource for our physicians and have proven to improve patient mortality," said Erik Wexler, president and COO of Northwest Hospital Center. "Dr. Lansing is highly skilled in intensive care medicine. He and his team are a tremendous benefit to patients who will be treated within our new Intensive Care Unit. As treatment options for the most critically ill expand, such capabilities are mandatory to provide our community with the highest standard of care possible. I am delighted that Northwest Hospital is equipped to provide this care."
Northwest Hospital is a member of LifeBridge Health, a regional health organization, which includes Sinai Hospital, Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital, Jewish Convalescent & Nursing Home, and related subsidiaries and affiliates.
