Northwest Hospital Center Receives $800,000 for Intensive Care Unit Expansion Project

Northwest Hospital Center has been awarded an $800,000 grant from the state as recommended by the Maryland Hospital Association (MHA) through the Hospital Bond Project Review Program. The grant will be used for the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) renovation project at Northwest. The grant was part of a capital project state fund that was signed by Governor Robert Erhlich and will take effect in July 2005.
"We are thrilled to have received such a significant grant to help improve our already top-notch health care facility,” said Erik Wexler, president and COO, Northwest Hospital Center. "It is vital for us to constantly improve the quality of care that we provide to the local community. This grant will help us meet that goal, and we are truly grateful for the committee's generous recommendation.”
The new 12,000-square-foot ICU will include 16 beds and will be located on the second floor of the hospital, above the outpatient center. The new design will enable clinical staff to more efficiently care for patients and enhance the overall quality of care by bringing critically ill patients closer to key hospital services such as radiology, the emergency department and operating suites.
The ICU renovation project is scheduled to be completed in July 2006 and is just one aspect of an overall renovation plan for the hospital that totals $50 million. The plan also includes the building of new operating suites and the renovation and expansion of patient rooms. A hyperbaric treatment chamber for severe wound treatment was installed in March of this year as part of the renovations.
Northwest Hospital Center is part of LifeBridge Health, a regional health care organization that includes Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital, and related subsidiaries and affiliates.
