Northwest Hospital's newly established vein
clinic, led by Juan M. Juanteguy, MD, is now performing the Closure®
procedure, a minimally invasive treatment for superficial venous reflux or leaky
valves in the veins of the leg, which oftentimes leads to unsightly varicose
Varicose veins, known for their distinctive blue color
and bulging appearance on the skin, afflict an estimated 10-20 percent of the
adult population. In the United States alone that translates into 20-25 million
people, the majority of whom are women.
"As the neighborhoods surrounding the hospital continue
to grow, we feel it is important to expand and add to the services provided at
Northwest Hospital,” said Erik Wexler, president and COO of
Northwest Hospital. "Dr. Juanteguy, an experienced vascular surgeon,
is excited to bring this revolutionary technology to his patients.”
Developed over a four-year period, the Closure procedure
treats superficial venous reflux without the drawbacks of previous treatment
options including invasive surgical procedure, general anesthesia,
post-operative pain, bruising and prolonged recovery period.
"As one of the area's leaders in minimally invasive
surgery, Northwest Hospital is proud to add the Closure technique
to its list of specialties,” commented Juanteguy.
This patented technology uses a very small catheter and
radiofrequency energy to occlude, or seal shut, a saphenous vein, one of the
veins that runs up the leg from the ankle to the groin and helps return
oxygen-depleted blood to the heart.
The Closure procedure is an outpatient technique that is
often performed in a physician's office. The physician typically makes a
single needle puncture or small incision near the knee and inserts the slender
Closure catheter into the saphenous vein. The catheter is then positioned
near the top of the leg, energized and slowly withdrawn, sealing the vein
shut. There are no stitches, and most patients return to normal activity
within a day or two.
Northwest Hospital is a member of LifeBridge Health, a
regional health organization, which includes Sinai
Hospital, Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital, Jewish Convalescent & Nursing Home, and related
subsidiaries and affiliates.
