Northwest Hospital Center Receives Breast Care Grant
|
|
Northwest Hospital Center in Randallstown has received a grant from the Baltimore County Department of Health to develop a breast cancer education and screening program
for uninsured and underinsured women who live in Baltimore County.
Under the grant, Northwest Hospital Center will provide clinical breast exams, screening mammography services and breast health education services over an eight-week period beginning
May 1, 2004. Breast exams and mammography services will be performed at the hospital's Center for Breast Care and Bone Health.
"Northwest Hospital is committed to community outreach," said Erik G. Wexler, president and COO of Northwest Hospital. "Breast cancer is a treatable and curable disease when detected early. Through the Northwest Hospital Center Breast Health Program, we hope to provide women who would normally not have access to breast care services and education an opportunity to receive early detection and treatment."
Women who are without health insurance or whose insurance will not cover the cost of a mammogram and are over 40 years of age, reside in Baltimore County and have not had a mammogram during the past 12 months are eligible to participate in the program. In addition, they must meet specific financial eligibility requirements outlined as part of
the program.
The project will provide eligible women with free clinical breast exams and screening mammography follow-up. Women who receive abnormal test results will be referred to the
Baltimore County Department of Health Cigarette Restitution Fund for assistance with surgical consultation, biopsy and treatment by the State Diagnosis and Treatment Program, if necessary.
The campaign will also provide general breast health information to all participants who receive care at the center. In addition, the hospital will provide breast health awareness education at community centers,
churches and community organization meetings throughout western Baltimore County.
Targeted areas for the project include Randallstown, Woodlawn, Pikesville, Reisterstown, Owings Mills and Catonsville. Funding for the program is limited. Women are encouraged to
call the Center for Breast Care and Bone Health at 410-521-5913 to inquire about financial eligibility and other program requirements.
Northwest Hospital Center is a member of LifeBridge Health, a regional health organization that includes Sinai Hospital, Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital, Jewish Convalescent & Nursing Home, and related subsidiaries and affiliates.
