The Center for Memory & Behavioral Disorders at LifeBridge Health is a collaboration between Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital and The Sandra and Malcolm Berman Brain & Spine Institute.
The healthcare professionals at the center provide expert evaluation and treatment in a continuum of care for patients with dementia.
In this joint program, patients receive a comprehensive evaluation in a single half-day visit at one hospital location.
This collaborative approach provides a positive and efficient care experience for patients and their families and spares them from having to make separate trips to multiple healthcare providers on different days to accomplish a comprehensive evaluation.
In one visit, the Center’s team of neurologists, neuropsychologists, geriatric psychiatrists, and a psychiatric clinical nurse specialist conducts a thorough assessment and provides patients and families with a diagnosis, initial treatment plan for cognitive and behavioral symptoms, and education regarding available support services.
About Memory Loss and Dementia
Some facts about memory loss and dementia:
-
The most common cause of dementia in older people is Alzheimer disease, but other brain disorders (including strokes, frontotemporal disorders, Lewy-body disease, and other conditions) may cause dementia.
- Many patients with dementia also have behavioral disorders
- Other potential causes include depression, drug interactions, and thyroid problems. These are often reversible if detected early. A thorough evaluation of symptoms is necessary to determine the correct diagnosis.
- Early detection of dementia allows patients to begin therapy designed to slow the progression of memory loss. Although no cure exists for most dementias, drug treatment may improve symptoms and enhance quality of life.
In this WBAL-AM "Know Your Health" radio clip, Dr. Williams discusses early diagnosis of dementia and other brain disorders.
