The Child-Life Program serves both the Pediatric Inpatient Unit and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Armed with a strong background in child development and family systems, child-life specialists promote effective coping through play, preparation, education and self-expression activities. Services are provided in the playroom or at the bedside.
The goals of the Child-Life Program are:
- Encouraging optimal development of children facing a broad range of challenging experiences
- Educating patients and families and reducing their stress and anxiety
- Providing normal or home-like activities and experiences as needed for growth and development
- Creating opportunities for children to express their feelings and to bolster self-esteem and independence
- Providing emotional support for families
- Giving special attention to children facing health care and hospitalization challenges
- Helping families schedule hospital tours and individual pre-hospitalization visits
The program operates five days a week, including evenings and holidays.
