| Philanthropy has become increasingly important to hospitals as the health care environment changes, both in Maryland and across the nation. Managed care, reductions in rate reimbursement and a host of other factors make it difficult for hospitals to continue to stay technologically advanced, expand services, build new facilities and renovate aging ones to provide high-quality patient care in modern comfortable surroundings.
Philanthropic gifts have helped all of our institutions achieve many of their goals and provide solutions to many of our community's health care needs. The following list contains examples that were made possible through the generosity of concerned donors:
- The Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics cares for patients using progressive treatments for limb deformities, skeletal abnormalities, and bone and joint preservation and replacement.
- An outpatient surgery center and outpatient treatment center at Northwest Hospital Center provides a convenient central location for tests, diagnostic procedures and outpatient treatments. Patients can complete all pre-admission testing in the convenient outpatient center.
- New initiatives, such as the Eden Alternative at Levindale, which is
part of a national effort to transform conventional nursing homes into homelike environments. The goal of the Eden Alternative is to provide the residents with regular interaction with children; interaction with pets; and the opportunity to care for abundant plants, gardens and flowers. The establishment of "kibbutz" groups provides a family atmosphere and a strong community bond.
- Highly equipped Cardiac Catheterization
Laboratories at Sinai Hospital and Northwest Hospital Center are part of the comprehensive care available.
