Obstetrics and Gynecology Grand Rounds is the principal lecture forum for
the department. Held Thursdays at 7:30 a.m., they feature a guest lecturer and
are attended by all department physicians, nursing staff, medical students, and
colleagues from other departments. Frequently, Grand Rounds is presented by
a "visiting professor" who holds additional formal teaching conferences with the
residents and faculty over a two-day period.
Every autumn the department sponsors a one-day postgraduate conference. Recent
Annual Symposium topics included Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility
for the Office Practice, Group B Streptococcus: Obstetric and Pediatric
Issues, Gynecologic Surgery and Cancer in the Age of Health Care Reform,
Gynecologic Problems in Older Women, and Current Trends in Perinatal Health
Care.
In addition to Grand Rounds and the Annual Symposium, the department has a comprehensive
didactic schedule that includes weekly Chairman's Rounds and joint Perinatal
Rounds with Pediatrics. There are formal lecture series in all subspecialty
areas, including Human Sexuality and Primary Care Medicine. Journal Club
meets on a monthly basis and is an excellent forum to learn to critically evaluate
the literature. Problem-solving rounds are held weekly in conjunction with
the Departments of Pathology and Radiology.
The above educational activities are complemented by the daily morning report
that involves educational instruction combined with the clinical case review
process.
